Washington, DC - Industrial biotechnology provides natural methods for producing food flavors and stabilizers that enhance the taste of foods, keep it fresher longer, and increase nutritional value for consumers. The World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioprocessing will feature executives from industrial biotech companies discussing the latest developments in use of biological production methods to replace chemicals in food ingredients and flavorings.

"Industrial biotechnology is helping to create new food flavoring and other ingredients that improve nutrition, lower costs, and reduce waste," said Brent Erickson, executive vice president of BIO's Industrial & Environmental Section. "Enzymes have been used in food production for thousands of years, for making bread, cheese, wine and beer. Newly discovered enzymes are now being used to add active ingredients – such as amino acids and vitamins – or to increase the shelf-life of foods. The World Congress will present the latest advancements in science for food production."

The World Congress will feature a morning plenary session on Tuesday, April 29, 2008:

• Kent Snyder, President and CEO, Senomyx, Inc.
• Pradip Mukerji, Ph.D., group manager, Strategic Expansion and Volwiler Research Fellow for Abbott Nutrition Division of Abbott Laboratories.
