Flavor Chemical First For Treatt

June 24, 2001

Florida Treatt Inc, a leading chemical distributor in the flavor and fragrance market, has established the first commercially available source of 3-Methyl-2,4-nonanedione. A high impact, specialty aromatic chemical, 3-Methyl-2,4-nonanedione can be used in tea, honey and parsley formulations – all key flavor types in the food sector. Its launch marks an important step for flavorists in their quest to improve formulations and mouthfeel to develop truly distinctive products.

Imparting hay-like green notes, 3-Methyl-2,4-nonanedione is found naturally occurring in dry green and black tea as well as dry parsley. Flavorists will find many uses for
3-Methyl-2,4-nonanedione – these include its use in savory applications which require the taste of parsley, or in beverage applications in a brewed tea base, where concentrations of just 0.1 – 0.2 ppm add a tea-like aftertaste.

3-Methyl-2,4-nonanedione has also been found to impart pleasant and warm hay-cereal-flour-like buttery, green woody-type notes.
3-Methyl-2,4-nonanedione can be used in conjunction with natural menthatriene; both are important character compounds, naturally occurring, in parsley for example.

Treatt offers over 300 small-scale specialty chemical top notes, including pyrazines, thiazoles and other sulphur, nitrogen and oxygen heterocyclic chemicals. As leaders in the development of innovative flavor and fragrance ingredients, also including essential oils and natural fractions, Treatt is the first port-of-call for flavor manufacturers who want to formulate exciting new products. Treatt's extensive stockholding of ingredients enables its customers to buy large and small quantities at short notice.
