Nutritional Specialties, Inc. Introduces Lifetime Liquid D3

Scottsdale, AZ - Baywood International, Inc. announced recently that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Nutritional Specialties, Inc./dba LifeTime, has launched Liquid D3 into its line of liquid supplements for distribution into health food retailers.

LifeTime's Liquid D3 provides vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) in an easy-to-take, once-daily dose. Vitamin D3 is the preferred form, due to its high level of biologic activity. The main function of vitamin D is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. It also aids in the absorption of calcium, helping to form and maintain strong bones. Without vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, soft, or misshapen. In addition, without vitamin D, the small intestine absorbs no more than 10-15% of dietary calcium. In a person with vitamin D sufficiency, the small intestine absorbs, on average, 30% of dietary calcium; during growth, lactation, and pregnancy, the efficiency increases to 80%. By the time a person reaches adulthood, bone growth stops and bone remodeling continues. Vitamin D deficiency in adults causes secondary hyperparathyroidism that can precipitate and exacerbate osteoporosis.

"It can be difficult to obtain enough vitamin D from food sources. Consuming vitamin D fortified foods and adequate sunlight exposure are essential for maintaining a healthy vitamin D status, but for many people it is not enough, and dietary supplements are needed to meet the daily requirements," says Dr. Lisa Maturo, ND, Scientific Director for LifeTime. "Taking a liquid form of the vitamin will provide you with ample vitamin D for your body with optimal absorption," Dr. Maturo added further.

Vitamin D3 is the preferable form of vitamin D (as opposed to vitamin D2, ergocalciferol) due to its higher potency and longer duration of action. Vitamin D2 potency is less than one third that of vitamin D3. The introduction of Liquid D3 builds upon LifeTime's current core brands in the bone health market including its Liquid Calcium & Magnesium Citrate in six different flavors including grape, lemon-custard, orange-vanilla, strawberry, blueberry and pina colada as well as LifeTime's Liquid Osteo Density Blend in raspberry cream.

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) (www.nof.com), osteoporosis and low bone mass are currently estimated to be a major public health threat for almost 44 million US women and men aged 50 and older. By the year 2010, it is estimated that over 52 million women and men in this same age category will be affected and, if current trends continue, the figure will climb to over 61 million by 2020. The estimated national direct care expenditures (including hospitals, nursing homes, and outpatient services) for osteoporotic fractures is $18 billion per year in 2002 dollars, and costs are rising. Based on substantial research findings on consensus among leading experts, the NOF is updating its recommendation for daily adequate calcium and vitamin D intake. NOF revised its recommendations after careful consideration and review of a growing body of evidence that calcium and vitamin D deficiency is widespread throughout the world as well as in the U.S., particularly in adults 50 and older. According to NOF recommendations, adults under age 50 need 1,000 mg of calcium and 400 to 800 IU of vitamin D3 daily and adults age 50 and over need 1,200 mg of calcium and 800 to 1,000 IU of vitamin D daily.(a)

NOF also recommends the following preventive regimens as the best defense against osteoporosis:

  • A balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D
  • Weight-bearing and resistance-training exercises
  • A healthy lifestyle with no smoking or excessive alcohol intake
  • Talking to one's healthcare professional about bone health
  • Bone density testing and medication when appropriate

LifeTime Liquid D3 contains 1,000 IU per serving, or 250% of the USRDA, of Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) and was designed to address the deficiency of Vitamin D consumption. The product is available in mixed berry in a 16 fluid ounce size, providing 32 once-daily servings. LifeTime's Liquid Calcium & Magnesium Citrate formulas contain 1,500 mg of elemental calcium per ounce in blueberry and pina colada and contain 1,200 mg of elemental calcium per ounce in grape, lemon-custard, orange-vanilla and strawberry. Osteo Density Blend contains 1,500 mg of elemental calcium per ounce in raspberry cream.
