Health Benefits of Danisco Ingredients
Lactitol is a reduced calorie sweetener that is used in confectionery products to replace crystallizing sugars such as sucrose. As a prebiotic ingredient, Lactitol reaches the colon undigested where it promotes beneficial bacteria, such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria, inhibits the adhesion of pathogenic bacteria to the cell walls, and promotes butyrate fermentation.
Litesse polydextrose is a soluble fiber that is only 1 kcal per gram. It is non-crystallizing and can be used as a sugar replacer for glucose syrups in confectionery formulations. Also a prebiotic, Litesse physiological benefits include slow, sustained fermentation along the length of the lower gastrointestinal tract, production of short chain fatty acids, fecal bulking and reduced transit times. Litesse is well-tolerated at levels as high as 90 grams per day, and its prebiotic effects have been reported at doses as low as 4 grams per day. The sweetness synergy between Litesse and sugars and polyols enables the development of reduced sugar and reduced calorie products without the need for high intensity sweeteners.
Xylitol is a reduced calorie sweetener that is as sweet as sucrose with unique dental benefits. Oral bacteria are unable to utilize Xylitol as an energy or carbon source, so there is no acid production following consumption. The oral pH and plaque pH remain neutral, demineralization does not occur and, therefore, there is no caries formation. Xylitol also inhibits the growth of some of the main cariogenic bacteria, and has been shown to reduce the adhesion properties of Streptoccocus mutans.
