Glenmark Recalls Frozen Beef Products

Glenmark Industries Ltd., (Chicago, IL) is voluntarily recalling approximately 100,000 lb of frozen beef products as a precautionary measure after a product sample was found to contain E. coli 0157:H7.

"We are acting now in the best interest of consumers," said Dave Van Kampen, president of Glenmark. "We will take no chances when it comes to the safety of our products."

Health officials in New York State analyzed a sample of a frozen beef burger produced by Glenmark on Jul. 10, 1998 following the illness of one person. Van Kampen says state health officials have told them that the person is doing well and that they have been unable to positively confirm that this illness is connected to Glenmark's product or E. coli 0157:H7.

The recalled product was primarily distributed in the form of frozen burgers to restaurants and other food service organizations. All customers have been notified and are in the process of completing the recall. In addition, some of the product was distributed through the retail food market.
