USDA Announces Three-State Meat Recall
The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service has recalled about 83,000-lb of ground beef sold in Illinois, Michigan and Indiana for possible E. coli 0157:H7 contamination. Federal officials say a sample of the meat taken April 27 tested positive for the microorganism on Monday, sparking the recall.
The coarse-ground beef was processed and distributed on the wholesale level by Omaha-based All American Meats Inc. on April 14 . The meat was packet in 10-lb chubs and sold for further processing at butcher shops and grocery stores.
According to Linda Swacina, a USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service representative, last week's E. Coli-related recall of 500-lb of beef at Jewel Food Stores in Chicago prompted federal regulators to test on-hold meat purchased by the chain. Those tests pointed to a contaminated sample from All American Meats.
